Ruud Gullit finds it strange that Ajax decided last season not to appoint Michael Reiziger, but John Heitinga as temporary successor to the dismissed Alfred Schreuder. The former midfielder explains this Rondo on Ziggo Sports.

Schreuder was fired from the Amsterdam team at the end of January after a long series without victories. The club management then moved Heitinga on from Jong Ajax to finish the season. Gullit finds it strange that Reiziger was not chosen at the time.

“You have Reiziger who wins the Kitchen Champion Division with Young Ajax. He is then suddenly passed by Heitinga. That’s strange, isn’t it? Isn’t that crazy?” says Gullit. “Then you already have someone with experience… They all want someone with the Ajax DNA.”

“I don’t understand it all. I’m looking at it and I think to myself: all those players have left. Gerald Vanenburg gone, Winston Bogarde gone… Everything is gone. It really is a very strange regime,” the former midfielder is clear. Marco van Basten also thinks that there is not much point in firing Maurice Steijn.

“It wasn’t good last year either and they wore out two trainers,” says the former striker. “You can keep changing, but it also has a lot to do with the quality on the field.” Ronald Waterreus then points to the debacle surrounding Sven Mislintat and the fact that the club management allowed that to happen.

“It’s completely wrong at the top (the club management, ed.). They snored for two years. Now it is seeping through and there is a mess everywhere,” responds Van Basten, who is also not necessarily in favor of the appointments of Michael van Praag, John van ‘t Schip and Louis van Gaal.

“You can also exaggerate in that. There are so many support groups at the moment. Then nothing happens if everyone has something to say,” said the analyst.
