PSV and Feyenoord will cross swords in the Philips Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Both teams had a positive dress rehearsal in the run-up to this top match. PSV won 1-3 when visiting Fortuna Sittard, while Feyenoord blew over VVV-Venlo 6-0 in-house. For Feyenoord, which is eight points behind PSV, it is important to find a connection for place two in the Eredivisie. AZ and Vitesse are also five and six points behind PSV, respectively, in the place that entitles them to qualify for the second heat of the Champions League. For the people of Eindhoven, therefore, every reason not to be satisfied with a point in advance. In collaboration with TOTO, we are looking ahead to this top duel.

Looking at the recent past, the team of trainer Roger Schmidt knows that it will be a hell of a job to beat Feyenoord. PSV was unable to win the last five Eredivisie matches with the Rotterdam club, two draws and three defeats. This happened for the last time between 1997 and 2000, with no fewer than seven games in a row without a win at the time. What is additional concern for the Eindhoven club is that PSV also appears weak against the other top four teams in the Eredivisie. None of the last twelve league matches against Ajax, Feyenoord and AZ has been won (five draws, seven defeats). The last time such a top game was turned into a win was on December 22, 2018, when AZ left Eindhoven with a 3-1 defeat.

Feyenoord is currently working on a bad series in the Eredivisie. After all, the last five league matches outside of De Kuip were not won (twice a draw, three defeats). Such a bad run was last set in March 2019, when seven away games in a row were not won by Feyenoord. Only sc Heerenveen (nine matches) and RKC Waalwijk (seven matches) are currently waiting even longer for an away victory in the Eredivisie. However, with the strong recent performances against the Eindhoven team, PSV may just be the right ‘away medicine’ for Feyenoord ailing outdoors.

The man in shape at PSV is without a doubt Eran Zahavi. Before the winter break, the Israeli was only accurate once in six league matches, while he has already scored eight times in eleven Eredivisie matches this calendar year. In addition, he scored all four goals in the diptych with Olympiacos in the second round of the Europa League. With double figures in the Eredivisie context in the offing, Zahavi can deliver a special performance as an elderly player. With 33 years and 232 days, he can become the oldest player on Sunday against Feyenoord at the time of his tenth Eredivisie goal for PSV since Trevor Ford in 1958 (34 years and 201 days).
