Florian Grillitsch is employed by Ajax after almost seven months, with only three hundred official playing minutes for the team from Amsterdam. Partly due to injuries, the 27-year-old midfielder from Austria only made thirteen appearances for Ajax. Grillitsch late talking to AjaxTV know that he had imagined his employment in the Dutch capital somewhat differently.

Ajax snatched Grillitsch away from arch-rival Feyenoord last summer. The midfielder is in the Johan Cruijff ArenA until next summer, but Ajax has the option to extend his contract for two seasons. Whether that will happen remains to be seen. Just like under the dismissed Alfred Schreuder, Grillitsch hardly gets a job now that John Heitinga is at the helm. Schreuder still knew the right-footed controller from his time at TSG Hoffenheim.

“I am not completely satisfied, because I want to play more,” says Grillitsch candidly. “It’s not always easy to be honest. I am an experienced player, but this is a new situation for me. Because of my experience, I can handle it.” His experience was one of the reasons that Ajax attracted Grillitsch. The midfielder played no less than 178 games in the Bundesliga in his career. In addition, Grillitsch has already won 35 international matches with the Austrian national team.

The fact that Grillitsch has made few minutes is also due to his injuries, he says. “I got injured in November and after about four weeks I had a setback. I have been fully fit again since February. It was disappointing for me, but it’s part of the game. Now I am healthy and that is the most important thing.” In the TOTO KNVB Cup match won against De Graafschap (0-3), Grillitsch recently left a good impression. Via social media, various supporters said they would like to see him more often at Kenneth Taylor’s place.
