Willem van Hanegem does not understand that national coach Frank de Boer is going to make two changes for the last group match at the European Championship against North Macedonia. As it looks now, Donyell Malen and Ryan Gravenberch will replace Wout Weghorst and Marten de Roon. Van Hanegem states that there are still changes ‘because everyone really gets a stage to express an opinion’ and cites Kalvijn’s performance at the NOS as an example.

“It’s only two changes, but I hadn’t changed anyone at all. At first it was about in this country that we had so little time to fine-tune the system and that we had to seize every opportunity to get the automatisms in, and now there were plenty of people again who thought the time was right to do something like this. to give everyone a little rest”, Van Hanegem writes in his column in the Dutch newspaper General Newspaper. “That is also because everyone really gets a stage to express an opinion.”

“Especially at the NOS. They have a kind of mission with their analysts. Something for everyone or something,” continues Van Hanegem. Saturday evening joined the NOS YouTube star Kalvijn, whose performance could count on the necessary criticism. “There was someone sitting there on Saturday night who has quite a few followers on YouTube, I understand. Calvin. He asked Alfred Schreuder whether Pedri has a base place at Barcelona. Everyone can join me, but if they have no idea what it’s about, don’t invite them.”

“Fortunately, he was not asked about any changes at the Dutch,” emphasizes Van Hanegem. De Roon is probably spared against North Macedonia because he received a yellow card against Austria, something that according to the curve ‘shouldn’t be a problem’. “Malen is a different type than Weghorst. It just depends on what you choose. But don’t come up with nonsense that Malen managed to prepare the 2-0 against Austria and that he is therefore better than Weghorst. Malen was given all the space in the final phase, because Austria moved forward. Moreover, Weghorst could have had two assists, but Memphis and Stefan de Vrij missed those opportunities.”
