Hugo Borst understands little of SC Cambuur’s approach to the game in Ajax’s away match. The team of trainer Henk de Jong lost 9-0 on Saturday evening in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Borst writes in his column in the General Newspaper that it was De Jong’s fault that the duel between Cambuur and Ajax developed ‘spermicide’, as he sent his team onto the field with the idea of ’joyfully playing football’.
“You would say that Cambuur’s trainer looked at the performance of Ajax in Lisbon in midweek. Ajax went completely wild there. Perhaps Henk de Jong thought that these Portuguese did not resemble Portuguese, and that is quite true, Sporting’s defense was a parody of a Portuguese defence. But it did not detract from the fact that Ajax impressed”, Borst points out to Ajax’s midweek 1-5 victory over Sporting Portugal in the Champions League.

“Trainers have to come up with a plan, or a ruse. Henk de Jong had three days to do that. In bed, on the toilet, in the shower, surely something brilliant will come to mind? Not so. Cambuur once played soccer in Amsterdam. Thank God it didn’t turn out 10-0 on Saturday evening, but I would have awarded that nice, hard-learned Henk de Jong that painful result,” writes Borst. He wonders what possesses an experienced trainer to ‘give the order to play football happily against a team that is superior’.
“What would it be? It cannot be the belief that David can beat Goliath, a Dutch Eredivisie trainer is not retarded,” said Borst. He suspects another motive, namely that anti-football ‘doesn’t score’ in football. “Perhaps he also thinks that he should not deny the fresh character of his nice team. Because oh, they are just as comfortable in it.”
“Perhaps he himself, indoctrinated by the dogma of that glorified Dutch football culture, finds it morally reprehensible to build two brick walls and play Portuguese (every duel a battle of life and death, slow down, suck, schwalbes)”, continues.
