Memphis Depay responded on Tuesday to his statement of support for Quincy Promes. The Dutch attacker received a lot of criticism after he supported his friend, who was convicted of drug trafficking and assault.

“I will never let my friends and family down,” it quotes Algemeen Dagblad from Depay's mouth during the Dutch media day. “That doesn't mean I agree with everything they do, but I won't let them down.”

“We football players create a lot of content, I certainly do, I post all kinds of things on my social media. About football, but also about the things I experience. My posts about Quincy were not intended to provoke, we were just on holiday in Dubai, together with all kinds of other friends.”

According to Depay, not everyone is aware that he comes from 'a different background'. “Not an easy environment. My brother was also imprisoned for ten years, you can read that in my book, but I have hardly ever had a question about that. I did about Quincy.”

“Benjamin Mendy and Dani Alves were also involved in a case, in a criminal case, but that does not mean that I do not deal with them. I do not know the Quincy as you describe him in that way. That does not mean that I do things talk well, or just support everything my friends do. But I don't let them down. That's just not me.”

Koeman's response

National coach Ronald Koeman called Depay's statement of support for Promes 'not helpful'. “I think you can make it easier for yourself by not doing it. It only creates aversion,” Koeman said during the press conference on Monday.

“Of course I respect what he says,” Depay responded to his trainer's words a day later. “Anyone's advice is welcome, especially from people I work with.”

Depay emphasizes that his relationship with Koeman is 'very good'. “Of course I respect his opinion. I have discussed it with Nigel de Jong (director of the KNVB, ed.), yes, but that remains something between him and me.”
