Henk ten Cate will leave as coach of Al-Wahda, the club from the United Arab Emirates announced on Monday morning. By mutual consent, both parties part ways, Al-Wahda reports. Ten Cate had been active with the club since March, which is currently in sixth place in the UAE competition.

Ten Cate first worked as a trainer for Al-Wahda from December 2018 to May 2019. He was then succeeded by Maurice Steijn, after which Mark Wotte also became the club’s trainer. Ten Cate returned in March of this year. He guided the club to participation in the Asian Champions League, in which the quarterfinals turned out to be the end station earlier this month due to a 1-5 defeat against Saudi Al-Nassr.

In the UAE competition, Al-Wahda is in sixth place with eleven points from seven matches. Ten Cate won only two of the seven games; the other five ended in a draw. The 66-year-old Dutchman was in his fourth employment in the UAE, after previous periods at Al-Ahli, Al-Jazira and therefore Al-Wahda. In July he was mentioned as a potential national team coach of the Dutch, but he did not like that job.

“Too much has just happened. I don’t just step over that,” Ten Cate said The Telegraph. “Nico-Jan Hoogma (director of top football at the KNVB, ed.) can certainly call me once. Not for the position of national coach, but to finally apologize on behalf of the KNVB for the character assassination that the football association committed against me in 2017. tried to commit.” Ten Cate was in the race to become national coach in 2017 and, in his own words, had the commitment of then technical director Hans van Breukelen. The choice later fell on Dick Advocaat.
