Latest update:

Ajax is having a difficult time at Het Kasteel. The Amsterdam team is 1-0 behind after the first half against Sparta Rotterdam due to a goal by Arno Verschueren. At X, a very striking free kick from Ajax midfielder Jordan Henderson (who plays as a defender) is the subject of discussion.

Six minutes before half-time, Ajax was allowed to arrive in a dangerous spot for a free kick. Not specialist Branco van den Boomen, but Henderson stood behind the ball. The Englishman surprised by taking the free kick short to Kenneth Taylor, who cleared the ball for Henderson with one touch.

The variant failed miserably, because the shot that Henderson then fired ended up in the block at the Sparta defense. Goalkeeper Nick Olij was able to catch the ball very easily.

Henk Spaan wonders on X why Henderson stood behind the ball in the first place. “Why does Henderson take the free kick when Van den Boomen is next to him? Away!”

Also ESPNanalyst Kees Kwakman is of that opinion. “I don't understand this at all. I don't know if Henderson has made many free kicks in his career, but Van den Boomen should simply demand the ball here. He should say: 'I don't know how many free kicks I made in France at Toulouse. …'”
