Ronald Koeman looked relaxed on Friday afternoon when he joined the press conference in the run-up to the top match against Atlético Madrid. The coach was naturally asked questions about his future as a coach of Barcelona, but started the press talk with a famous statement from Louis van Gaal.
“I would like to recall a statement by Louis van Gaal. Hello, friends of the media”, Koeman started the press conference. While the Spanish media is busy speculating about Koeman’s successor, the Dutchman said he had not heard anything from the club yet. “I know that the results are decisive, that is normal,” said Koeman when asked about his position. “My intention is to stick to my battle plan. The club has not told me anything yet. Everyone has their opinion but I only focus on the players and prepare the game.”
Koeman did not want to hear anything about the speculation about a possible successor. Mundo Deportivo writes that Xavi, Roberto Martínez and Andrea Pirlo are at the top of the list, as Thomas Tuchel and Jürgen Klopp have not proved feasible. “I also have eyes and ears,” Koeman said of the rumours. “I know a lot of things are coming through and I assume some of that will be true. What is my relationship with the chairman like? I don’t want to answer that question. I haven’t spoken to him. I know he’s at the club this morning. but I didn’t see him. We were training.”
Barcelona are still unbeaten in LaLiga, but have already drawn three times against lesser opponents on paper. Koeman is therefore committed to achieving a result during a visit to Atlético on Saturday. Jordi Alba returns to the squad after an injury, while Pedri is missing. Barcelona are currently sixth in LaLiga with twelve points from six matches. Atlético is two places higher, but also played one more game.
