Mitchell van der Gaag will continue at Ajax as assistant coach of the first team, the club management announced on Monday afternoon. John Heitinga, currently the coach of the Ajax Under-18s, will transfer to Young Ajax due to the promotion of his colleague. The former defender will therefore make his debut next year as head coach in professional football. The reserves team finished in sixteenth place in the Kitchen Champion Division last season.

Van der Gaag has been ultimately responsible for Young Ajax since mid-2019. After the summer break, he takes over from Christian Poulsen in Erik ten Hag’s technical staff. The former coach of Excelsior and NAC Breda, among others, is still in Amsterdam until the summer of 2023. Poulsen, who has been associated with Ajax since 2018, wants to ‘focus on other things’, according to the Amsterdam club. He is, however, in talks with the board about a different role within the club.

Young Ajax is not unknown territory for Heitinga. The former the Dutch-international had already been an intern for some time in 2016 with former trainer Marcel Keizer. Since 2017 he has been responsible for the Ajax Under 18 team. The national champion also announced on Monday that Gerald Vanenburg will start as a technical trainer at Young Ajax from next season.
