Ahead of the Premier League match between Everton and Manchester City, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Vitaliy Mykolenko put their hearts to each other. The left backs of both clubs flew into each other’s arms around the center circle during the warm-up. Their embrace follows Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Mykolenko gets support not only from Zinchenko, but also from Everton supporters. The fans have made a large banner with the image of Mykolenko and the text: ‘We stand with Ukraine’. That banner was displayed before the game. Mykolenko and Zinchenko have both spoken out strongly against the Russian invasion. “I want the whole world to know that the Russian military is currently killing civilians in all cities in Ukraine,” the Everton defender wrote on Instagram this week. “Russian media write that they defend Donetsk and Luhansk, but that is not true.”

“It’s hard to hear the fear in my parents’ voices, who are looking for a way to protect themselves and help others, when I can’t help my parents. I ask the whole world to assist my homeland. I I am proud to be Ukrainian,” said Mykolenko. Zinchenko also spoke out: he wished Russian President Vladimir Putin “the most painful death”. Zinchenko also later shared an image, in which a Facebook user wrote: “If you’re Russian and don’t pronounce it now, then you’re our enemy forever.
