Feyenoord still has faith in Ömer Gündüz. The nineteen-year-old midfielder has extended his expiring contract for a year, which means that he will be under contract in Rotterdam-Zuid until the summer of 2022. Gündüz has had a difficult year and sees his contract extension as a reward for the hard work he has delivered in recent months.

Gündüz, who has been walking around Varkenoord for almost ten years, reported in early September that his knee ligament had been torn. He went under the knife and has been working on his rehabilitation ever since. “Due to the corona measures and an injury, Ömer has hardly had the opportunity to prove himself this year,” says technical director Frank Arnesen of the Under-21 midfielder. “So, also because we are convinced that there is enough in the barrel, we want to give him another chance to distinguish himself as a player of the Feyenoord Under-21.”

Gündüz is looking forward to the new season with confidence, he says on the club site. “Every day I have done my best to bounce back as best I can after my injury and have always remained positive. The fact that Feyenoord just wants me back next year gives me a lot of confidence in the run-up to next season.” The youngster made the switch from Excelsior Maassluis to Feyenoord Academy in 2012.
