Ronald de Boer enjoyed the performance of Arnaut Danjuma during the World Cup qualifier between the Netherlands and Gibraltar (6-0). The Villarreal wing attacker was good for a goal on Monday evening as a substitute. De Boer says in the studio of Ziggo Sports that national coach Louis van Gaal is made to doubt his system by the play of Danjuma and Noa Lang.

“I am more concerned with the positive things I saw and those were the newcomers”, De Boer begins about Lang and Danjuma. “That gives hope again. Van Gaal has said he will probably play 5-3-2 anyway, as he has no wingers. Well, these players have shown that we do have them. Van Gaal keeps talking about the right side, but Noa Lang is so multifunctional that he can play in any position. You also already have a right winger with Steven Berghuis, so I think you can continue to play 4-3-3.”

“I am also in favor of being able to play different systems as a team. But when I see a Danjuma like that, there’s a speed in it. Okay, it remains Gibraltar”, De Boer continues. The analyst and former international is asked to what extent the performance of Danjuma – who was added to the selection as a replacement for Cody Gakpo after the international match against Latvia – should be put into perspective, given Gibraltar was the opponent.

“Of course I have also seen him at work in the Champions League,” De Boer responds. “He also plays at a fantastic club, you don’t just play there. You have to have good qualities to play there. There are also a few of Villarreal in the Spanish team and he has shown that he belongs there. Strength, speed, looking for someone: you immediately see the threat in him. I really enjoyed him and think the 4-3-3 can last, it will make Van Gaal doubt. It’s nice to see these kind of players at work.”
