Ronald de Boer wants to put the current average of Memphis Depay at the Dutch into perspective somewhat. The Barcelona attacker scored two goals and two assists in Monday night’s game against Gibraltar (6-0 win), making him involved in a total of 11 goals during the current World Cup qualifying cycle. De Boer says in the studio of Ziggo Sports that Depay will also have to stand up ‘against the countries that really matter’.

“It’s a great average,” De Boer begins. Depay was a total of 73 international matches for the the Dutch, good for 35 goals and 28 assists. “Depay is a very impulsive player, like Noa Lang, for example. He is a top player for the Dutch. I have to say that the goals he has scored have often not been against the big countries. He has scored once against France, from a penalty. And against Austria. He scores against the countries against whom you expect him to score.”

“I think Luuk de Jong had scored quite a few goals in those matches,” De Boer continues. Depay scored on behalf of the the Dutch against Portugal, Germany (in two games) and France. “Against Gibraltar, Luuk de Jong probably also made three. We also need to put it in perspective. Soon we will have to settle Depay in the matches against the countries that really matter. France, Brazil, those kinds of countries.”

“I’m a Memphis fan, let me be clear. Although I don’t think he is a striker, but a left winger,” De Boer concludes. Luuk de Jong stayed on the bench against Gibraltar for ninety minutes and was good for three goals during the current World Cup qualifying cycle, against Turkey, Latvia and Gibraltar. Wout Weghorst did come in as a substitute against Gibraltar and provided an assist.
