The hard core of Internazionale sees nothing in a return of Romelu Lukaku. The striker aired his heart on Thursday evening in an interview with Sky Italy and indicated that he was having great difficulty finding his place at Chelsea, the club that took him over from Intern last summer for 115 million euros. Remarkably, Lukaku is already thinking of a return to Milan, but if it is up to the hard core, this will not become a reality.

Via a banner, the fanatical supporters of Inter give a reaction to the flirt of the Belgian on Friday. “Those who escape when it rains don’t count,” the banner reads. “Those who stay when it storms count.” Lukaku confessed in the interview that he fondly remembers his time at Inter, for which he played two seasons. In the past football season, Lukaku was one of the great stars in the team that won Inter’s first league title in eleven years. The fact that the Belgian then switched to Chelsea made him absolutely unpopular with the i Nerazzurri supporters, he realizes. “First of all I would like to apologize to the fans of Inter because I think the way I left should have been different.”

“I should have talked to the supporters first, because they have meant a lot to me, to my family, to my mother and to my son,” said Lukaku, who is eager to return to Milan. “I didn’t say anything about my departure before, because I didn’t think it was the right time. I think now is the time. I have always said that I will return to Inter, I really hope so. Not at the end of my career, but at a level where we can win new awards.”

Lukaku says he is still thinking about Inter. “Inter fans are the best in the world,” said the striker. “I love the city and my best level of my career was at Inter. I am in love with Italy, I have Inter in my heart. Last summer I went to talk to the board and asked for a new contract. I said: ‘I’m 28, I wanted to spend my life in Italy with a new contract…’ But Inter said no. Maybe they didn’t have the financial momentum. It was hard for me to accept.” Lukaku says he would have stayed with Inter if the club had been financially able to keep top players. “In that case, I would have stayed 100 percent with Inter last summer. We don’t need to discuss that. Then Antonio Conte and Achraf Hakimi left and there were rumors that the club was in trouble…”
