As is often the case, some big names will be missing from the approaching European Championships in Germany. In any case, it is certain that the seriously injured Sven Botman will not be part of the final European Championship selection of national coach Ronald Koeman. There have been more injuries, while other big names simply failed to qualify. Football zone lists the most important names for you.

Haaland will not miss EURO 2024 due to persistent injuries. Norway simply failed to qualify for the final round in Germany. A disappointment, because Manchester City's top scorer could not shine at the World Cup in Qatar. The only option for Haaland is to do everything he can in the coming months to emulate the successful 2022/23 season. The 30-time international (27 goals) won the treble with Pep Guardiola's team and can repeat that trick this season.

After the World Cup in Qatar, the easy-scoring Haaland will also miss the European Championship in Germany.

The multifunctional Alaba suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury in December in the first half of Real Madrid's home match against Villarreal (4-1 win). It soon became clear that the now 31-year-old defender could definitely put an end to the approaching European Championship. Alaba, who is not expected back on Real's training field until July or August, will therefore miss Austria's group match with the Dutch national team on June 25 in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.

The Dutch team will not have to deal with David Alaba at the European Championship.

Domenico Berardi

Berardi (29) can rightly be called unlucky. Sassuolo's right-footed winger had just recovered from a meniscus injury when disaster struck again at the beginning of March. Berardi tore his Achilles tendon in the away match against Hellas Verona and left visibly shaken. The experienced winger, who won the European title with Italy in 2021, must recuperate until at least October and will therefore follow the European Championship via television.

Berardi tore his Achilles tendon and will therefore miss the European Championship.

Sven Botman

Botman's hopes of participating in the European Championship were recently dashed in Newcastle United's FA Cup match against Manchester City (2-0 defeat). His serious cruciate ligament injury requires a recovery period of six to nine months, leaving Koeman with one less option in the center of his defense. The question is whether Botman, who is still waiting for his first playing minutes in the Dutch team, was actually selected, especially given the enormous competition at the heart of the Dutch defense.

Botman seemed like a serious candidate for the European Championships, but that dream was shattered due to a serious injury.

Courtois is having a true disaster season. Real Madrid's tall goalkeeper was recently seriously injured for the second time in six months and will therefore not shine on behalf of Belgium at EURO 2024. In any case, it was uncertain whether Courtois would take over for the Red Devils given his very difficult relationship with Domenico Tedesco. The national coach claimed last year that Courtois skipped a European Championship qualifier because he was not given the captain's armband, which the goalkeeper said were lies. Since then, player and coach have been at odds with each other.

Courtois hopes to be fit again at the end of June, too late to show himself at the European Championships.

Gavi

There was a lot of buzz surrounding the serious cruciate ligament injury that Gavi sustained in November last year. His employer Barcelona was furious that the prodigy had to appear in the European Championship qualifier against Georgia, when Spain had already qualified for the European Championship. Given the overcrowded playing calendar, Gavi should have been given some rest, was the opinion of the Catalans. According to national coach Luis de la Fuente, Barcelona's talent was fit enough to play. “Something like that can happen. It was just pure bad luck.”

Gavi would have loved to shine at the European Championships, but Spain has to do without the great talent in Germany.

Paul Pogba

Pogba's career seems over due to the four-year suspension for alleged doping use. So no European Championship for the 91-time international of France, who won the world title in 2018 with lesson Bleus. Pogba last played an international match in March 2022 and was mainly in the news afterwards due to injuries and doping issues. France reached the World Cup final in Qatar without him and will be aiming for European glory in Germany this summer without the midfielder.

Pogba won the World Cup in 2018, but a European title is not an option anyway.

Aleksander Isak

Isak was active at EURO 2020 and formed a dangerous attacking duo with Dejan Kulusevski in some matches. The former Willem II player was unable to score any goals and that will not happen this summer at the European Championships in Germany. Isak, who found the net 10 times for Sweden in 44 international matches, can therefore fully concentrate on the final phase of the season with Newcastle United. The ambitious one Magpies have fallen to mid-table in the Premier League and must do everything they can to achieve European football.

Isak was active at EURO 2020, but the attacker will not play at the upcoming European Championship.

Sandro Tonali

Illegal gambling costs Tonali the European Championship in Germany. The midfielder can write the final round on his stomach because of the ten-month suspension for his part in the widely reported Italian gambling scandal that became public last year. For Tonali, the focus is not on football for the time being, but on the treatment of his gambling addiction. The Newcastle United midfielder, with 15 caps for Italy, would otherwise certainly have been an option for national coach Luciano Spalletti.

Tonali will miss the European Championship with Italy because of his persistent gambling addiction.

Martin Odegaard

In the last two seasons, Martin Ødegaard has become the big driving force in Arsenal's midfield, which is dreaming of the first league title since 2004. Unfortunately for the 25-year-old playmaker, the situation at international level is very different. Norway only participated in a European Championship in 2000 and has been waiting for a new participation for more than 2 decades. Ødegaard will have to wait until at least the summer of 2026, when the World Cup will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico, to show his skills on the international stage.

Ødegaard is focusing on Arsenal for the time being, because Norway was unable to secure a ticket for the upcoming European Championship.

Viktor Gyökeres

Gyökeres is unstoppable this season. The 25-year-old striker managed to find the net no fewer than 36 times in 39 matches for Sporting Portugal. But where he shines on the Portuguese fields, there was little success as an international. Gyökeres and Sweden had a difficult European Championship qualifying campaign and were no match for Belgium and Austria. It therefore promises to be a quiet summer for the attacker, who is already linked to Arsenal.

Gyökeres scores continuously for Sporting, but sending Sweden to the European Championship was not an option.

Stefan Savic

The 33-year-old Savic would have liked to experience another European Championship in the autumn of his career. The veteran of Atlético Madrid managed to score a few times in the qualifying cycle, but that was not enough to guide Montenegro to the European Championship. The dream was alive for a while when they took a 0-1 lead against Hungary in November and Serbia trailed against Bulgaria. However, Montenegro lost 3-1 in Budapest, making EURO 2024 a utopia for Savic and associates.

Stefan Savic can probably no longer be admired at a major tournament.

Victor Lindelöf

Lindelöf has been captain of Sweden since August 2021, which was not a match for Belgium and Austria in qualifying group F and was also not good enough to qualify for the play-offs. The experienced center back (29), usually a security at the back of Manchester United under manager Erik ten Hag, made a nice gesture in November in the final European Championship qualifier against Estonia (2-0 win). Lindelöf gave the captain's armband for once to Albin Ekdal, who retired from Sweden after seventy international matches.

66-time international Lindelöf can focus on Manchester United for the time being.

Edin Dzeko

Dzeko could continue to dream of his very first European Championship participation, as Bosnia and Herzegovina qualified through the group stage for the play-offs of the final round in Germany. The final of the play-offs was also in sight for a long time, but in the final phase against Ukraine things went completely wrong due to goals conceded in the 85th and 88th minute (1-2 defeat). The 38-year-old Dzeko, who made his only appearance in a major tournament at the 2014 World Cup, seems to have his best days as an international behind him.

Edin Dzeko never took part in a European Championship and that probably won't happen again.

Dejan Kulusevski

The attacking midfielder and forward (23) with Macedonian roots already has experience playing at a European Championship. Kulusevski was active at EURO 2020, which ended for Sweden in the eighth finals. A second European Championship is therefore not possible for the time being for one of Tottenham Hotspur's revelations. Partly due to the offensive contribution of Kulusevski the Spurs currently fifth in the Premier League, with a view to fourth place and a ticket for the Champions League.

Dejan Kulusevski is one of the figureheads of the Swedish team, which nevertheless failed to qualify for EURO 2024.
