Ricardo Nunes has created a unique event in Portuguese football on Saturday afternoon by helping his team Varzim to victory as goalkeeper. The final post surprised his fellow goalkeeper on the other side with a long kick out ten minutes after the break and thus formed the basis for the 2-0 victory that Varzim booked against Mafra.

The game was barely ten minutes in the second half, when Nunes got hold of it after a stranded attack by Mafra. Unsuspectingly, the 38-year-old closing post resumed the game with a distant kick, unaware that it would invade the other side of the field. Marfa goalkeeper Carlos Anastacio completely misjudged the ball, which bounced on the edge of the penalty area and then ended up in the goal. Varzim had already taken the lead in the first half.

It was not the first time that Nunes managed to score as a goalkeeper. Exactly fifteen years ago, in March 2006, he did the same in the match against Moreirense. Even then, as Varzim’s goalkeeper, he saw a kick on the other side of the field invade. Nunes is in his second term with the second divisionist from Portugal. In the meantime, he was under contract with FC Porto, but it never came to a debut in the first team of the Portuguese superpower.
