Egypt failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations. In a blood-curdling penalty shootout, the North Africans ultimately lost to Congo: 1-1 (7-8 ns). Egypt is therefore eliminated from the final tournament, while Congo awaits a meeting with Guinea in the quarter-finals.

Egypt played against Congo without injured star player Mohammed Salah. Mohamed Elneny, Arsenal midfielder, among others, did appear at the kick-off.

It was Egypt dominated in the initial stages. It provided, among other things, a good heading opportunity for Ahmed Hegazi. However, the centre-back nodded over the goal from close range.

On the other hand, Théo Bongonda squandered an opportunity on behalf of Congo. He shot from high over. After about forty minutes of play, the Central Africans scored.

Brentford striker Yoane Wissa took advantage of a quick throw-in, crossed and saw the ball headed in by Meschak Elia: 0-1. However, Egypt quickly recovered and leveled before half-time when Mostafa Mohamed converted a penalty: 1-1.

The second half was slightly less exciting, with both teams not seeming to want to lose. The game therefore ended in extra time, in which Mohamed Hamdi soon received a stupid second yellow, and therefore a red card.

However, extra time was also inconclusive, meaning a penalty shootout was necessary. Both teams took seven of the first eight penalties, after which it was the turn of both goalkeepers.

Egypt goalkeeper Abo Gabal hit the crossbar, after which he failed to clear his fellow goalkeeper Lionel M'Pasi's penalty. The Congolese goalkeeper became the hero of the evening, without managing to save a penalty.
