Villarreal and Atlético Madrid balanced each other on Sunday evening. The game in Estadio de la Cerámica was a true spectacle from the first minute of play, which eventually ended in a 2-2 draw. The goal of the evening was credited to Ángel Correa, who scored from the middle line. Villarrreal is in eighth position after the twentieth round in LaLiga; los Colchoneros occupy fourth place in the ranking.

Simeone was forced to send a badly damaged team onto the field. Antoine Griezmann suffered a muscle injury in the cup match against Rayo Majadahonda (0-5) and is out of circulation for at least three weeks, while Luis Suárez was suspended after his fifth yellow card of the season. The striker duo was thus formed by Matheus Cunha and Correa. Arnaut Danjuma was missing from Villarreal, who is still struggling with knee problems. Although Villarreal dominated the first half, Atlético took the lead in the tenth minute of play.

In the build-up at the center circle, Dani Parejo handed in the ball to Correa. The striker saw goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli standing far in front of his goal, and suddenly scored with a flawless shot: 0-1. Five minutes later, Villarreal counter-punched. Moi Gómez gave a cross to Alberto Moreno, who saw his bet hit the post. On the other side, Correa then thought to double the lead, but the Argentinian scored from an offside position: goal disallowed. A goal by the home team was also disallowed two minutes later after a bizarre run-up.

After a handball in Thomas Lemar’s sixteen-meter area, referee Javier Alberola put the ball on the spot. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak parried Gerard Moreno’s effort, but Parejo thought he could still score from the rebound. However, the midfielder made hands on the catch and the goal was declared void. After half an hour of play, the equalizer stopped. Oblak had no grip on the ball when Parejo spun the ball in from the right side of the field. Pau Torres reacted very alert and tapped in the 1-1 from close range. In the second act, Villarreal even took the lead.

Gerard Moreno had an excellent through ball on Alberto Moreno. Face to face with Oblak, he remained icy calm and the attacker put his team through the goalkeeper’s foot at 2-1. Halfway through the second half, Atlético came back thanks to a blunder from Rulli. The closing post unfortunately ducked over the ball after a shot from the edge of sixteen by Geoffrey Kondogbia: 2-2. In the final phase, the latter was still sent to the side. The midfielder took his second yellow card with his foul on Yéremi Pino and was allowed to take a shower early.
