Latest update:

Paul Simonis is the new trainer of Go Ahead Eagles, the Deventer team confirmed via official channels. The assistant trainer of Robin van Persie at sc Heerenveen succeeds René Hake, who is leaving for Manchester United. Henk de Jong from sc Cambuur was also in the picture, but he will not be the new trainer.

Football International reported on Saturday that Paul Simonis was well on his way to De Adelaarshorst to replace Hake there. But De Jong was also approached, as was evident from an interview of his person with Omrop Friesland.

“Is it true that I was approached by Go Ahead? Yes,” De Jong replied, visibly surprised. “That doesn’t come from us. That has to come from them. It’s not nice of me to say that. You should ask the people at Go Ahead Eagles.”

“I'm at a great club. We have a plan for the coming years and I want to be part of that. I wish Go Ahead everything, they are a world-class club,” says the most successful Cambuur coach in the club's history in a characteristic way.

Kowet had already started preparing for the new season. Dennis van der Ree already took on the group training. On July 25, Simonis will make a fine coaching debut. He will compete with Go Ahead against SK Brann in the preliminary rounds of the Conference League.

Simonis also worked at Go Ahead between 2020 and 2022. He was the permanent assistant of Kees van Wonderen, who left sc Heerenveen. Simons recently extended his contract in Friesland, despite Van Wonderen's departure, but he will not serve it out.
