Go Ahead Eagles booked a big victory on Helmond Sport on Sunday. The team of trainer Kees van Wonderen won no less than 5-1, partly due to a hat-trick by Bradly van Hoeven. Go Ahead is in third place in the Kitchen Champion Division with 71 points. With two games to go, De Graafschap has a four-point lead. The number two is promoted immediately, so Go Ahead has to hope for missteps by De Graafschap.
Van Hoeven had only scored five times this season and had never made a double in the Kitchen Champion Division, let alone a hat-trick. The attacker struck for the first time after half an hour. He reacted well to a pass from Luuk Brouwers and made it 1-1, after Arno van Keilegom had opened the score from a breakout by Helmond. Until that moment, there had already been opportunities on both sides, including a header on the crossbar from Sam Beukema.
Almost immediately at the start of the second half, Van Hoeven took care of the 2-1, after preparatory work by Sam Hendriks. Brouwers signed for the third goal in minute 65 after a nice combination with Giannis Botos and a few minutes later, halfway through the second half, Van Hoeven curled the ball around goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel. Ten minutes before the end, Boyd Lucassen’s 5-1 followed. It meant a painful defeat for Helmond, which had the play-offs in sight through the fourth period with a victory.
The theme of the competition was ‘100 years of Vetkampstraat’. It is exactly 101 years ago that the club moved to the place where they now play, but last year the festivities due to corona were canceled. The players competed against Helmond in a beautiful retro outfit, which is based on the outfit that was worn during the first match on the Vetkampstraat in 1920. Especially for the occasion, the club once again collaborated with the clothing brand hummel, which in thirty years of was the main sponsor for the hundred years.
