Gibraltar is not pleased with some of the slogans sung by the Spanish football team at the ceremony. On Monday evening, the European Championship winner was honored in Madrid and the players and the public sang that 'Gibraltar belongs to Spain'.

Gibraltar is Spanish”, Rodri and Álvaro Morata, among others, began to sing during the championship celebration. It was a song that had already been circulating in Germany, and now it was sung at the top of the lungs by the audience present at the ceremony.

The song is a nod to the Spanish, who defeated England 2-1 in the European Championship final. Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located directly off the Spanish coast. In the past, there have often been political tensions between Spain and England over Gibraltar.

Although Gibraltar has been part of the British Kingdom for over three hundred years, the Spanish government has never recognised the territory as part of the United Kingdom. That is why the players and the public jokingly 'claimed' the territory after the victory over England, but that did not go down well with Gibraltar.

Following the slogans, the Gibraltar Football Association announced through official channels that it would file a complaint with UEFA. The reason for the complaint is the 'extremely provocative and insulting nature of the celebrations'.

“There is no place for this behavior in football,” the football association continues in the statement. On social media, residents of Gibraltar are also reacting angrily to the songs of the Spanish fans, who themselves mainly label it as a 'joke'.

It is not yet known whether UEFA will actually impose sanctions following the official complaint.
