Part of the Berlin wall has been defaced in the run-up to the Conference League match between 1. FC Union Berlin and Feyenoord. The so-called East Side Gallery, a part of the wall that was painted by artists, has been sprayed over with graffiti and provided with the word ‘Feyenoord’. Two arrests have been made, German media reported.

At about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday night, an employee of a security company saw two masked men daubing the wall. The alarmed police then found a huge drawing of about eighteen by two meters with ‘Feyenoord’ on it. Two masked Dutch men aged 21 and 25 were arrested near the wall. They had paint residue on their hands and were in possession of several spray cans. The suspects may appear in court as early as Wednesday.

The graffiti has now been repainted with white or gray paint. Also, the letters ‘Ultra’s Union!’ put over it. The East Side Gallery is a permanent open-air gallery on the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall. More than a hundred different artists have painted murals. In 2009 the East Side Gallery was also daubed.

Feyenoord will play against Union in the Conference League on Thursday evening. 5,200 tickets have been sold for the away section, but thousands more are expected to travel to Berlin in hopes of getting a ticket for the home section. Toon van Bodegom, chairman of the supervisory board, said last week that he was pleased that Union had made so many tickets available. However, he is also concerned about possible disturbances. Prior to the home game two weeks ago in Rotterdam, the board of Union was attacked by hooligans in a catering business.
