For Giorgos Giakoumakis, a nice transfer may still be in the offing. The attacker of VVV-Venlo is seen by FC Basel as a possible successor to Arthur Cabral, the regional newspaper reports Basler Zeitung Sunday. Cabral still plays for Basel, but is becoming harder to keep for the club by the week.

On Sunday, Cabral scored no fewer than four goals in the won league match against Servette (5-1). The Brazilian also scored in the previous three games that Basel played: against Partizani Tirana (0-2 win) and Újpest (1-2 win) in the preliminary round of the Conference League and in between against FC Sion (6-1) in the competition. After 3 competition matches, the counter is already at 5 goals; last season, Cabral scored 18 goals in 33 appearances. Behind the scenes, Basel is anticipating a sharpshooter’s departure and is therefore exploring the rush hour market.

The Swiss top club already lost a striker this summer, because Ricky van Wolfswinkel left for FC Twente on a free transfer. For Giakoumakis, a longer stay in Venlo seems almost impossible. The attacker hopes to cash in on his spectacular season, in which he scored 26 times, with a transfer. At the beginning of last month, technical manager Stan Valckx said to ESPN that he did not want to put a price tag on the Greek. “No, I’m not taking part in that. Over two million? Yes, that’s for sure.” He didn’t want to go any further. “It’s not horse trading.”

The future of Giakoumakis is also a topic of conversation on Sunday evening The the Dutch Summer. René van der Gijp does not believe that Giakoumakis will stay with VVV. “They play Kitchen Champion Division. He’s not going to do that, is he? In any case, it is not good for the Netherlands that the top scorer of the Eredivisie cannot find a club.” He is linked to Feyenoord by Greek media, but Johan Derksen does not think he is a good striker for the Rotterdam team. “No, I don’t believe that. On a whim, he shot a lot of them at VVV.”
