The team that will be active on behalf of Germany at the Olympic Games made a strong statement on Saturday afternoon during a friendly against Honduras. The Under-23 team played an exhibition game against Honduras behind closed doors, but decided to stop the fight five minutes before the end. The reason was racist statements against Jordan Torunarigha. The German team then decided to step off the field.

The game entered the final phase, when the German Olympic football team decided to step off the field. “The match had to be stopped five minutes before time with a 1-1 score,” the German Football Association tweeted on Saturday afternoon. “Our player Jordan Torunarigha was racially insulted, after which we left the field together.” It is unknown who is responsible for the racist statements. The game was played behind closed doors, so there was no audience for the friendly match.

Torunarigha usually plays his matches at Hertha BSC, where he acts as a central defender. The duel with Honduras was divided into three halves of half an hour. The German goal came in the name of Felix Uduokhai. Germany will kick off the Olympic Games against Brazil for the first time on July 22. Three days later, Saudi Arabia is the opponent. The third and final group match will take place on July 28, when Ivory Coast is the opponent.

It is not the first time that Torunarigha has been the victim of racial misconduct. In February last year, the same happened during the cup match between Hertha and Schalke 04. At the time, the sounds came from the stands, where Schalke supporters made monkey noises. This time the treatment came from a player from Honduras, assured SPOX.
