Galatasaray achieved a very difficult victory on Tuesday evening. The score was 1-0 against Hatayspor at home. Mauro Icardi gave the home team an early 1-0 lead and never relinquished the leader. The lead over number two Fenerbahce is now five points again.

Galatasaray started with Hakim Ziyech in the starting line-up and took an early lead. From a corner kick by Dries Mertens, Icardi cleverly put his opponent aside, after which the top scorer was able to head in freely: 1-0. It was Icardi's eighteenth goal of the competition, bringing him level with Edin Dzeko.

Even after the opening goal, it was Galatasaray that had the most chances. For example, Mertens hit the crossbar with a great effort and several attempts by Icardi and Wilfried Zaha were blocked by Hatayspor's defense.

After the break the match continued for a while, without any real danger to either goal. The first moment of revival after the break was after about an hour of play, when Carlos Strandberg thought he had leveled the score for the visitors. However, VAR threw a spanner in the works and disallowed the goal on the basis of offside.

Galatasaray escaped unscathed, but even then was unable to take control of the match definitively. The home team got a number of corner kicks, but they were no longer as effective as the one in the twelfth minute.

In the absolute final phase, Hatayspor wanted to go for the equalizer, but it didn't go further than a number of corner kicks. Galatasaray ultimately deserved the victory.

Galatasaray has a total of 84 points thanks to the victory. With seven games to go, the team has a five-point lead over Fenerbahçe, which still has a game in hand. Both clubs will compete against each other in the Supercup final on Sunday.
