An innocent joke from Joan Laporta has provoked a furious reaction from Toni Freixa, one of the three remaining presidential candidates at Barcelona. The trio, including Víctor Font, recently entered into a debate. Afterwards, Freixa spoke outside the collected Spanish media and in the background Laporta showed with a playful hand gesture how he thought about the interview with his competitor.

Laporta, clearly visible in the background, then made a snapping gesture towards the camera with an index and middle finger, indicating that the conversation with Freixa had better be stopped. It was clearly a joke from Laporta, but Freixa clearly does not like the joke of the former Barcelona president. “Only those who know they are protected by the media dare to show such disrespect. The members of Barcelona will make their voices heard in the elections,” Freixa writes on Twitter with a video of El Golazo de Gol, showing Laporta making the conscious gesture.

The members and supporters of Barcelona will know on Sunday 7 March who the new president of the club is. Various Spanish media think that Laporta, also the preses in the Camp Nou between 2003 and 2010, is the absolute top favorite. However, Freixa and Font do not give up in the fight for the succession of Josep Maria Bartomeum who was arrested at home last Monday. The former Barcelona president is suspected of corruption and money laundering. In addition, he would have used the PR agency i3 Ventures to polish his image at the expense of Gerard Piqué and Lionel Messi, among others. The case leaked and Barça-gate was born. Bartomeu, who is now free again, left Barcelona at the end of October.
