Freddie Ljungberg, Arsenal’s assistant manager, has left the club to “strive for new possibilities”.

The 43-year-old former Gunner player was also the London club’s interim manager after Unai Emery was given the go-ahead in November last year.

The Swedish-born Ljunberg was part of Arsenal’s coaching staff when Mikel Arteta was later appointed permanent manager. Ljungberg was also in charge of Arsenal’s u.15 and u.23 teams.

Ljungberg played 326 games for Arsenal and was part of the 2003/04 Invincibles under Arsene Wenger.

“I have been involved with the club on and off since 1998 and am very grateful for the opportunities as both player and coach,” he said in a statement.

“I wish Mikel Arteta and his team all the success in the future.

“Thank you to the fans for their support.”

Arteta, in turn, said: “Freddie has been an important part of my team since I joined the club.

“He did a good job of lifting the team when Unai Emery left the club.

“I have 100% respect for him and I am convinced we will find each other on the sidelines in the future,” Arteta pointed out. AP
