PEC Zwolle has strengthened itself with Mees de Wit, the Overijssel club announced on Tuesday through the official channels. The 23-year-old wing defender is taken over from Sporting Portugal and will wear the PEC shirt for the next two seasons. In addition, an option is included for an additional season. After Kostas Lamprou, Jasper Schendelaar, Siemen Voet and Slobodan Tedic, De Wit is the fifth addition to the number thirteen of the past Eredivisie season.

It is not the first time that De Wit shows up at PEC. In 2019 he already trained with the promise team of the Zwolle people, but it did not come to a transfer at the time. De Wit played in Ajax’s youth academy for two years, between 2015 and 2017, and was part of the promise team that became champion of the Kitchen Champion Division in 2018. De Wit played five games at the start of the championship season, but then ran into a disciplinary suspension and was no longer in the plans of Michael Reiziger. In the summer of 2018, he moved to Sporting Portugal.

“I am happy with my contract with PEC Zwolle,” says De Wit on the PEC website. “This club has been interested in me for a long time. The fact that I have been here before and the lines with Mike Willems (technical director, ed.) have been very short all that time, underlines that once again. I learned a lot in Portugal and was allowed to play and train at a high level. However, it is good for my development to start making minutes now. I hope to do that at PEC Zwolle.”

“Of course I would sign if Ajax wants me back, it’s still my club”

De Wit mainly played in the U23 team for the Portuguese national champion, after which he was loaned out to Orihuela in the second half of the 2019/20 season. Last season he often trained with the first, but he did not make his debut. “Mees is a player who for some may have been off the radar for a while,” said Willems. “But not for us. We have also followed him closely in Portugal and we know who we are bringing in. Not least physically, he has made great strides in Portugal. That is really something we were looking for. He can also be used on the entire left wing, giving Art Langeler several options for deploying him.”
