Florentino Pérez has made headlines again with a leaked audio clip. From research by El Confidencial It turns out that the president of Real Madrid was involved in a Mexican corruption case around 2009. According to reports, Pérez’s construction company, ACS, was awarded major government projects in Mexico in exchange for tickets to Real Madrid games, free flights and hotel stays.

The audio clip from September 15, 2009 features a conversation between Fernando Fernández, the first vice president of the Royal and right-hand man of Pérez, and a representative of Felipe Calderón, then president of Mexico. In an ‘informal setting’, presumably a restaurant, Fernández talked about an agreement that appealed to the Mexican. He is said to have a deal for two Mexican officials, the Minister of Energy and Calderón’s right-hand man.

“Let me see. I can pay for your flights, I pay for the hotels and I invite you… to Milan”, the former vice president may have referred to the Champions League match between Real Madrid and AC Milan (2-3) on October 21, 2009. That’s going to be a madhouse. The deal interests me because Real Madrid can open the doors for you, and for Florentino and his ACS, a door will also open…”, concludes Fernández, receiving a positive response from Mexican policymakers.

As early as 2008, the magazine published Process that Fernández, who himself is an entrepreneur in the shipping industry, became acquainted with Juan Camilo Mouriño, a close contact of Calderón. Fernández is said to have received an order for ships worth 200 million euros from Mexico and he received a guarantee for a cooperation of no less than ten years. El Confidencial suggests that Fernández used his Mexican contacts to help Pérez’s construction company land contracts. In return for that service, Fernández could count on the role as first vice president at Real Madrid throughout Perez’s directorship.
