The Italian government has amended the corona rules in such a way that top athletes must be vaccinated to participate in competitions. According to Italian media, there are around ten players left in Serie A who are currently not vaccinated against the corona virus. The clubs and the football association are currently trying to convince the vaccine refusers to do so after all.

Strict corona measures have been in place in Italy since the beginning of December. A negative test result is no longer enough to go to a restaurant, the cinema or the theater. Only the display of the so-called green pass, which is obtained after double vaccination or recovery from corona, gives access. This will now also apply to top sports in a team. “This could set an example for the rest of the population,” said Andrea Costa, Secretary of State for Health.

After protest from the Italian Football Association, the government is prepared to make some exceptions. For example, football teams from countries without a vaccination obligation are still allowed to play on Italian soil. This means that the European matches of Internazionale, Juventus (Champions League), Napoli, Atalanta, Lazio (Europa League) and AS Roma (Conference League) can continue.

Italian media know that there are still about ten players who are unvaccinated, most likely Nicola Sansone among them. The thirty-year-old defender of Bologna spoke out strongly against corona vaccination on social media. There is also a player from AS Roma who has not been vaccinated. Serie A will resume on Thursday afternoon from 12.30 p.m. with the Bologna – Inter and Sampdoria – Cagliari matches.
