The first riot around Radja Nainggolan after his return to Belgium is already a fact. The 33-year-old midfielder of Royal Antwerp FC was intercepted by a police patrol around four o’clock on the night from Saturday to Sunday when he tore through Antwerp with his car at high speed, various Belgian media reported.

Police subjected Nainggolan to a breath test, which revealed that he was just above the legal limit. He has now lost his driver’s license for fifteen days. It is not Nainggolan’s first violation of traffic regulations. In 2018, the Belgian, who has built up a considerable reputation both on and off the field, was convicted by the court of Sint-Niklaas for being drunk behind the wheel.

Interestingly, Nainggolan, who was transfer-free after the termination of his contract with Internazionale, spoke about his exemplary role earlier this month at his presentation at Royal Antwerp. “During a good first conversation with the trainer, he made his expectations clear. They went beyond football alone. Also in terms of mentality. I have to set an example for the young people, because I am still looked up to on the field.”

Nainggolan did not have to play this weekend, by the way. Royal Antwerp’s match against KRC Genk was postponed due to Antwerp’s obligations in the Europa League. On Thursday, Nainggolan and associates must try to make up for a 4-2 deficit against Omonia Nicosia.
