After two consecutive victories, PSV ran into a loss of points for the first time this season. Both Heracles Almelo and PSV scored from a penalty kick on Sunday, which resulted in a 1-1 final score. Except for the penalties, both teams created relatively little danger. PSV closes the third round as number five in the Eredivisie, while Heracles takes place in eleventh place with four points.

Heracles’ much-discussed penalty kick was awarded in minute 29 by referee Kamphuis. A long throw-in by Jeff Hardeveld from the left flank was extended in the penalty area by striker Sinan Bakis, after which Nick Viergever made a movement towards the ball with his arm. The PSV players, including Viergever, protested violently. The ball did not seem to touch Viergever under armpit height, but video referee Christiaan Bax did not intervene. From the subsequent penalty kick, Rai Vloet hit the right corner; keeper Yvon Mvogo dived in the wrong direction.

It was one of the few exciting moments in the first half. The penalty kick was debatable, but there were more reasons for PSV’s weak start: the visitors hardly created any chances in the first half and used a slow pace. Even after the penalty, PSV remained powerless. Heracles scored again in injury time, but that goal was rejected: Adrian Szöke was served by a through ball from Vloet, Viergever was too quick and came face to face with goalkeeper Mvogo to score. The arbitration took a few minutes to assess whether Szöke was offside at the time of play and then the goal was indeed rejected.

Roger Schmidt made three changes at the start of the second half. One of the players who left was Mohamed Ihattaren, who had a starting spot for the first time this season. One of the substitutes, Noni Madueke, made an important contribution: in a duel with Bijleveld, the striker went to the grass, after which Kamphuis pointed to the penalty spot. From eleven meters, Philipp Max took advantage of the opportunity for PSV. The goal did not give PSV any new inspiration, but Heracles seldom became really dangerous either. Halfway through the second half, Mvogo had to intervene after a bet by Vloet. A late swipe by substitute Donyell Malen, who was parried by goalkeeper Michael Brouwer, was one of PSV’s few achievements.
