FIFA has taken measures against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. The World Football Association has decided that matches of Russian teams must be played on a neutral ground for the time being, without showing the flag or playing the national anthem. In addition, Russia must start playing its matches under the name Football Union of Russia (RFU). The Polish Football Association has already announced that it does not intend to play against Russia under these circumstances.

Russia would actually play in the play-offs for a ticket for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in March. Poland – the opponent in the semi-finals – already announced on Saturday that it would not play against the Russians. Sweden and the Czech Republic – the possible opponents in the final – have also announced that they do not intend to continue a duel with Russia. The three countries appealed to FIFA to remove the matches in which Russia would play from the program for the time being.

FIFA is not going that far for the time being. The World Football Association has issued a statement condemning the invasion of Ukraine, expressing solidarity to the Ukrainians and calling for peace and dialogue. FIFA writes that it has been unanimously decided with the parties involved to take measures against Russia, “in line with the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)”.

During the Olympic Games, the Russian athletes are active under the name ROC, Russian Olympic Committee. In addition, during the medal ceremonies, the flag is not displayed and the Russian national anthem is not played. FIFA will now treat Russia in the same way. Russian teams are not allowed to play in their own country in international competitions for the time being. Home games are therefore moved to neutral ground.

FIFA claims to have been in contact with the football associations of Poland, the Czech Republic and Sweden. “We will continue to maintain close contact to find a correct and acceptable solution,” said the World Football Association. “FIFA continues to engage in ongoing discussions with the IOC, UEFA and other sports organizations to take further measures or sanctions, including the possible exclusion of Russian participants from competitions. If the situation does not change soon, it will be implemented.”
