Feyenoord qualified for the group stage of the Conference League on Thursday evening. A week after a 5-0 victory in De Kuip, Arne Slot’s team lost 3-1 against IF Elfsborg on Thursday evening, but because of the difference in goals, qualification for the group was never seriously endangered. Feyenoord did take the first defeat of the new season in an official game. A run of five games in which Feyenoord kept a clean sheet also came to an end.

Feyenoord started the game strongly. The team from Rotterdam, with Ofir Marciano and Wouter Burger as replacements for the absent duo Justin Bijlow and Marcos Senesi, were in control and got the first chance of the match via a shot by Tyrell Malacia. After 25 minutes a chance arose for Guus Til after preparatory work by Luis Sinisterra; Spartak Moscow’s mercenary hit the bar. Gradually, however, Elfsborg appeared more in the piece. Sinisterra prevented an opening goal from Elfsborg on the goal line, when Leo Väisänen created a big header after Marciano missed a cross from Alexander Bernhardsson.

Three minutes before half time, Elfsborg took the lead. Johan Larsson was allowed to explain for a free kick, just outside the penalty area, and hit hard through the inside of the right post. Feyenoord looked a bit nonchalant after the dominant phase in the first twenty minutes, but had little cause for concern because of the big win in the first game. Just after the break, however, Elfsborg doubled the margin. After a wrong throw-in by Marcus Pedersen, Elfsborg was allowed to throw in and the ball came through Jeppe Okkels to Alexander Bernhardsson, who came in front of Burger and placed the ball out of reach of Marciano.

Marciano prevented Elfsborg from making it 3-0 after a corner with a good save, after which Feyenoord scored from a beautifully played attack. After a nice opening by Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Luis Sinisterra entered the penalty area from the left wing, before operating the detached Til at the far post: 2-1. A clear handball from Simon Strand in the penalty area did not result in a penalty for Feyenoord due to the lack of a VAR. Thirteen minutes before the end, Elfsborg made it 3-1 with a deflected shot by Marokhy Ndione. Marciano prevented Jacob Ondrejka from making it 4-1.
