Feyenoord has distanced itself from the threatening and hurtful expressions against Steven Berghuis. Since Sunday, a reprehensible banner has been circulated on social media on which Berghuis is placed on a list with convicted criminal Martin van de Pol and crime reporter Peter R. de Vries, both supporters of Ajax who were liquidated this year.

According to the Twitter account Voetbal Ultras, which published the photo, the banner was made by Feyenoord supporters. There are check marks behind the names of Van de Pol (‘Polletje’) and De Vries, while the box next to Berghuis’s name is still open. On Saturday, during a practice match between Feyenoord and Werder Bremen, chants were heard in De Kuip. “Hey Steven Berghuis, dirty dirty cancer Jew, hey Steven Berghuis, just drop dead”, was shouted by fans present.

Feyenoord responded with a statement via social media on Sunday evening. “Feyenoord expressly distances itself from the very hurtful and threatening statements, such as the disgusting banner aimed at Steven Berghuis on social media, and calls for this to be stopped,” the club makes clear.
