Feyenoord failed to beat last-place FC Volendam on Thursday evening. Coach Arne Slot's team created the necessary opportunities, but played below par and ultimately had to settle for a point: 0-0. Feyenoord sees the gap with leader PSV grow to nine points and fails to distance itself further from FC Twente, which remains nine points behind the Rotterdam team. FC Volendam has gained a nice point and is now six points behind number sixteen Excelsior.

On the Volendam side, Brian Plat was assigned a starting place. He came on for Luke Le Roux. Plat started, just like earlier this season in De Kuip (3-1), at left back. Vivaldo Semedo had to provide the goals at the point of attack. On the Feyenoord side, Slot appointed Marcos López as the replacement for Quilindschy Hartman, who will most likely not play again this calendar year. Calvin Stengs made his starting return as number 10, leaving Ramiz Zerrouki on the bench.

The first danger came, unsurprisingly, from Feyenoord. Santiago Gimenez was given the necessary space on the edge of the box, turned open and shot a meter over Mio Backhaus's goal with his left. In the entertaining opening phase, both teams were dangerous in front of the goals, although Gimenez and Semedo did not take enough account of the offside rule. Feyenoord pressed, but also gave away some space and got away very well after fifteen minutes, when Semedo turned away from Thomas Beelen and shot against the post with his left.

On the other hand, Gimenez also had an excellent opportunity to open the scoring. The Mexican put Oskar Buur aside and then shot into Backhaus. The rebound was fired over by the Mexican. Feyenoord had a difficult time in the Kras Stadium in the subsequent phase. Volendam held up well and showed itself to be healthy and aggressive. Feyenoord had difficulty getting through and was provoked by Josh Flint in the person of Hancko. After a short incident, both players received yellow cards.

In the exciting final phase of the first half, both teams became dangerous. López came close with a shot towards the short corner, where Backhaus once again showed that he is a good goalkeeper. Volendam could even call themselves the better team in the closing stages of the first half, although they always lacked the necessary sharpness in front of goal. Semedo thus shot over into a promising position. However, the biggest opportunities were for Feyenoord. Paixão squandered a huge chance by shooting over from close range. Stengs' attempt was a lot better, but ended up just wide of the Volendam goal.

Even in the phase after the interruption, Feyenoord's play certainly did not stop and it came off well when Hancko prevented FC Volendam from making it 1-0 on the goal line. The North Hollanders played energetically and initially did not have to concede much. For example, the mediocre Minteh shot wide and Gimenez managed to get a shot on the ground, to which Backhaus had an answer, so that a possible penalty moment was never assessed by the VAR.

Halfway through the second half, Stengs was relieved by Ondrej Lingr, while Bart Nieuwkoop came on for Minteh. That didn't change much in the game image. Apart from a free kick from Paixão, who curled the ball just wide of Backhaus' goal, Feyenoord created little. Moreover, the sharp Volendam continued to lurk on the counter. In the final phase, defenders Hancko and Geertruida came close. The Slovakian came across Backhaus in the short corner, who moments later converted Geertruida's shot into a corner and saved from close range on Nieuwkoop's attempt.

In the ten minutes of injury time, Feyenoord pressed hard again. Lingr cut inside and shot towards the far corner, where Backhaus was once again FC Volendam's saving angel. Leo Sauer also failed to pull the trigger. The young Slovak shot over. Even deeper into injury time, Nieuwkoop seemed to suffer a fairly serious knee injury, but the defender was able to leave the field himself. There was no further scoring in the remainder of injury time: 0-0.
