After a long series of matches, Feyenoord faces the next challenge in the Europa League on Thursday: Wolfsberger AC. Although Feyenoord has been unbeaten in all competitions for twenty duels in a row, they did draw three times in a row. Last weekend, the team from Rotterdam even had the greatest possible difficulty with RKC Waalwijk: 2-2. In addition, attacker Nicolai Jörgensen sustained another injury. Will the lack of a real striker break up the Rotterdammers again, or will the three points finally stay in De Kuip again? In collaboration with TOTO, we are looking ahead to the European poster.

Feyenoord and Wolfsberger AC meet for the first time at European level. Feyenoord has played twice before against a team from Austria in the group stage of a European tournament. FC Kärnten was defeated both at home and away in the UEFA Cup in the 2003/04 season: 2-1 and 0-1. A match in-house should pose few problems for the Rotterdammers. Only two of the last ten home matches in the Europa League were lost to Feyenoord, against Fenerbahçe (0-1) and AS Roma (1-2). In these ten games, the team from Rotterdam also achieved five clean sheets.

On the other side of the coin, Feyenoord still seems to have a lot of trouble scoring. Feyenoord has won only one of the last ten Europa League matches (five draws and four defeat), and has already drawn 0-0 at Dinamo Zagreb this season. Although that seemed an excellent result in advance, a missed penalty and a number of great opportunities left a bitter aftertaste. Without the penalty, the team from Rotterdam already reached a combined number of 1.2 Expected Goals, and could therefore certainly have expected a goal. Is it the shape of Steven Berghuis? He took the penalty kick and seems to have a hard time in European duels. For example, in ten Europa League duels for Feyenoord he was only accurate once: in De Kuip against Young Boys (1-1).

That we can expect few goals does not seem to be very remarkable. At European level, there are rarely really many hits at Feyenoord matches. In the last thirteen matches in the Europa League of Feyenoord, more than two goals were scored in only three cases. In total, these 13 duels yielded 26 goals, an average of 2 per match.

Feyenoord does not seem to have to fear much from Wolfsberger AC. The Austrians have already been waiting for a victory in the Europa League for six matches, after it made its debut in the Europa League in September 2019 with a big win over Borussia Mönchengladbach (0-4). Since then, the team played a draw twice and was defeated three times. In their own league, things are not going well yet either. This season, four of the five league matches were lost, with only one win in between, and with fourteen goals only FC Admira Wacker (sixteen) conceded more goals in the Austrian Bundesliga. In the lost duels, the team from Wolfsberg had to take at least three hits each time. The perfect opportunity for Feyenoord to once again work on self-confidence in a European context.
