The professional football prosecutor has decided to conduct a preliminary investigation into the disturbances during the match between FC Utrecht and RKC Waalwijk (2-2). Supporters of the home team threw plastic cups of beer and also lighters onto the field on Saturday, after which referee Richard Martens decided to stop the game for 25 minutes.

Initially, the fans threw plastic cups of beer into the stands in Stadion Galgenwaard, but when lighters were added, Martens had had enough. “We have to draw the line somewhere,” Martens said ESPN. “We did that when lighters were being thrown. Because if we don’t do something about it, where will it end?”

Based on the statements of the parties involved, the Prosecutor decided to open a preliminary investigation. This could result in a penalty for FC Utrecht. It is still unclear whether a preliminary investigation will also be launched into the events during the IJsselderby between Go Ahead Eagles and PEC Zwolle (1-0). After fireworks were thrown into the away section, the PEC supporters responded by throwing chairs onto the field. Kevin Blom briefly stopped the game before half time.
