FC Twente will investigate whether Brian Brobbey has been treated racistly, writes TC Tubantia. On Sunday evening after the last competition match of the season against Ajax, Ajax player Steven Berghuis dealt a blow to a supporter who was standing by the bus. The regional newspaper then reported on the basis of an anonymous source that the motive behind the punch would be a racist remark towards Brobbey. Twente will now assess whether this is actually the case on the basis of video images.

Ajax lost a visit to FC Twente 3-1 on Sunday afternoon, as a result of which it finished third in the Eredivisie and definitively missed out on Champions League football for next season. After the game in the Grolsch Veste, images quickly circulated on social media of Berghuis punching a supporter. Tubantia released an eyewitness statement saying that Brobbey was called a ‘cancer black’.

The police units of Amsterdam and East Netherlands cannot and will not say whether reports have been received against Berghuis or the supporter. “It may also be that that person does not live in this region at all,” says a spokesman about the fan. Moreover, the police never comment on individual cases. FC Twente will investigate who the man in question is and what he would have shouted. Only then does the club want to discuss possible measures.

There is also a chance that Berghuis will be punished for his action. The attacker annex midfielder already received a fine from Ajax and could also be called to account by the KNVB. However, the football association says through a spokesperson that it is a difficult issue. “It happened outside the stadium, but it’s about football again.” The incident is the subject of discussion within the KNVB, you know Tubantia. More clarity is expected next week.
