Denilho Cleonise may not make the switch to FC Twente after all, technical director Jan Streuer reports. The leader of the Tukkers spoke to at the end of July TC Tubantia the expectation that the nineteen-year-old attacker would be conscripted. On Tuesday evening, however, in conversation with the same newspaper, Streuer announced that the possible transfer will still fail due to the radio silence of former employer Genoa.

Cleonise had an expiring contract with the Italian club and has been training with Twente since the beginning of July, which was planning to take over the left winger permanently. The attacker, who left Ajax for Genoa at the age of seventeen, also played in the lost practice match with Lazio (0-1) last Saturday. Still, a deal with the Cleonise now threatens to fall through, and according to Streuer that has everything to do with Genoa’s attitude.

“We received the information from his corner that he was transfer-free,” says Streuer. “So we put him on trial. Not wanting to be financially surprised, we asked Genoa to confirm on paper that he was free of transfer. But that confirmation was not given,” said de Streuer, who was also surprised by the Italians earlier this week. “Genoa had offered him a contract anyway, so we have to pay a training fee for him anyway. That’s a few tons. And we don’t have that money, especially not for a young player.”

As a result of the ‘unpleasant surprise’, Twente submitted a counter-proposal to Genoa on Tuesday, but the Serie A club has not yet responded. Streuer has issued an ultimatum and will pull the plug on the transfer if Genoa has not responded by Wednesday. “Otherwise we will stop. This should have been done long ago, it’s taking way too long. That is very annoying for that boy, because he is having a great time, wants to and has done well. But there has been no movement in the case for weeks and at some point it will be ready,” concludes Streuer.
