The ways of FC Groningen and Elias Olsson separate with immediate effect. The eighteen-year-old defender has been rented from Kalmar FF by the Groningen club for the past six months. FC Groningen had stipulated an option to purchase in the lease, but has decided not to take it, the club reported Monday afternoon.

Olsson, youth international of Sweden, played his matches mainly in the Under 21 of FC Groningen. Head coach Danny Buijs included the defender six times in the main squad’s match selection in recent months. Olsson made his debut as a substitute in the first team on October 27 during the 4-0 cup match against Helmond Sport. Exactly one month later, on November 27, the stopper also made his debut in the Eredivisie, in the final phase of the away match against Fortuna Sittard (1-4).

“We were certainly not dissatisfied with the development of Elias in Groningen and he also adapted well to his new living environment. However, we now had to make a decision about the purchase option. The conditions attached to this were too strict for us at the moment,” says technical director Mark-Jan Fledderus on the club site.

“That’s why it was not possible for us to take Elias permanently from Kalmar and we had to decide to let him go again. Elias is and remains an interesting player and we will certainly continue to follow him closely. For now, we thank him for his efforts at FC Groningen in recent months.”
