FC Groningen has rejected a second offer from Club Brugge for Bjorn Meijer, reports the Telegraph† On Monday it was already reported by various media that the Flemish had knocked on Groningen with an offer of 3 million euros for the left back. The Groningers did not agree with the proposal, after which Club Brugge reportedly increased the offer to 4.5 million euros. This offer would also the pride of the north are insufficient: technical director Mark-Jan Fledderus reportedly wants to see six million euros.

Meijer went through the youth academy of Groningen and made his debut in the main force last season in the last league match against PEC Zwolle. Meijer initially started this football season as a bench seat, but since the turn of the year he has been a fixed value in the team of trainer Danny Buijs. Meijer now has 21 official matches in the first team of Groningen to his name.

The development of the youth product came as a surprise to Groningen. The club sold Gabriel Gudmundsson to French champions Lille last summer and had Yahya Kalley as his successor. The young Swede was taken over from IFK Göteborg to fill in the position of his compatriot in the starting line-up. However, it was Meijer who took his chance as left back and stormily developed into one of the stars in the formation of Buijs, who will leave after this season.

Meijer himself would have set his sights on a transfer to the Belgian top club and not interested in the interest of other clubs. The defender still has a contract with Groningen until mid-2023, with a two-sided option to extend the contract for another year. The club was in talks with the native Groninger to upgrade and extend his contract, but those talks have been stopped due to the concrete interest of Club Brugge.
