Alessio Da Cruz has played his last match for FC Groningen. Football International reports on Wednesday morning that the Pride of the North does not wish to exercise the purchase option in the attacker’s lease. According to agent Menno Groenveld, Groningen had until June 15 to use the option agreed with Parma, but that has not happened in the past period.

Technical director Mark-Jan Fledderus wanted to continue with Da Cruz, who finished the 2020/21 season with 4 goals and 3 assists in 23 games in all competitions. The 24-year-old attacker, however, saw no point in a longer stay in the Eredivisie, as a result of which he returns to Parma, which has been relegated from Serie A. Da Cruz informed Groningen a few months ago and his stance has not changed in the final phase of last season, despite the club’s various attempts to keep him.

Fledderus already announced at the beginning of May that it was a pity that Da Cruz did not want to stick to a season in Groningen. “We think that Alessio has a lot of qualities and see a lot of stretch in him. But the moment he indicates that he does not want to continue with us, we must of course take that into account,” Fledderus said last month. in a conversation with Football International.

Da Cruz has a contract in Parma until mid-2022, although it remains to be seen what the Italians plan to do with him after the relegation. The attacker, who was recruited in January 2018, has so far only made ten appearances in the main force there. In addition to Groningen, he was loaned to Spezia, Ascoli and Sheffield Wednesday in recent years. In the Netherlands, Da Cruz also wore the shirt of FC Twente and FC Dordrecht.
