Xherdan Shaqiri has played his last international match for Switzerland, he announced on social media. The attacking midfielder, who has played 125 international matches, thanks everyone for their support.

Shaqiri is seen by many as a tournament footballer par excellence. The midfielder played no fewer than seven tournaments with the Swiss team and was also present in Germany this summer.

With a magnificent goal against Scotland, Shaqiri proved his worth once again in the second group match. His tally stops at 32 goals and 34 assists in the shirt of the national team.

“Seven tournaments, many goals, fourteen years with the Swiss senior team and unforgettable moments. It is time to say goodbye to the national team,” Shaqiri said via X.

The Swiss, who is under contract with Chicago Fire, thanks everyone for the support. “There are beautiful memories left and for that I say to you all: Danke, Merci, Grazie, Faleminderit!”

Shaqiri began his international career in 2010 as an 18-year-old under Ottmar Hitzfeld. He subsequently scored at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups and the 2016, 2021 and 2024 European Championships. No other player has achieved this.

The 2026 World Cup is a bridge too far for the man with the magnificent left foot. The last European Championship, in which he was knocked out by England in the quarter-finals with Switzerland, proved to be his last trick.
