It remains to be seen whether the semi-finals and the final of the European Championship will actually be played at Wembley. Due to the disappointing corona figures in Great Britain, doubts have arisen about whether the European Championship matches in London will continue. UEFA has entered into discussions with the British government to find a suitable solution. The semifinals are scheduled for July 6 and 7, with the final scheduled for July 11. The Puskas Arena in Budapest has already been put forward as an alternative.

Britain currently has a 10-day quarantine requirement in place for people wishing to travel there. This corona measure was supposed to expire on June 21, but the British government has postponed the end date of this restriction due to the currently un hopeful corona figures. Despite everything, UEFA remains hopeful for football supporters who want to attend the games in London next month.

“UEFA is pleased to announce that the capacity at Wembley for the matches in the knockout phase of the European Championship will be increased to at least fifty percent,” the European Football Association said in a statement on Friday. “At the moment we are talking with local authorities about admitting supporters from the participating countries, using a strict testing policy and a bubble that allows them to stay in the UK for less than 24 hours. In addition, special transport is being arranged and they do not go beyond the stadium. We understand very well that the British government is under pressure and hope that a positive solution will be found for all parties involved,” UEFA said.

Hungary, where the current corona situation seems to be a lot better than in Great Britain, is considered a serious option for UEFA, if Wembley is definitively canceled as a stadium for the semi-finals and final of the European Championship. “There is always an emergency plan ready, but we are nevertheless confident that the last week of the European Championship will be completed in London.” England will play against Scotland at Wembley on Friday evening and close the group stage against the Czech Republic on Tuesday in the same stadium.
