Erik ten Hag has substantiated his choice for Steven Berghuis in number ten position. Berghuis is preferred over competitor Davy Klaassen in the Champions League match with Borussia Dortmund. The Ajax trainer says that his decision is based on the form in which the candidates for the position are behind the striker.

“Why Berghuis and not Klaassen? Because Berghuis has played great in recent weeks,” Ten Hag says in front of the camera of RTL7. “Certainly in the Champions League, both in Lisbon and against Besiktas. There he was decisive and decisive. The shape has been the deciding factor. I also know that Davy is a very good option. It’s a tough choice, because you know Davy can bring it for you.”

Klaassen started the season as an attacking midfielder, but was replaced by Berghuis in September due to a groin injury. Klaassen is now fit again; a week and a half ago he shot the the Dutch to a 0-1 victory over Latvia. On Saturday, both players were in the starting lineup against sc Heerenveen (0-2 win), but that was due to the absence of Antony. The Brazilian later returned from his international duties, so Berghuis played as a right winger. Now Antony returns to the right winger position and Berghuis takes the place behind striker Sébastien Haller.

Ten Hag also expects that the two teams will not be inferior to each other on Tuesday evening, although he sees Dortmund as the favorite for the win in Group C. “I think they are two teams that are fairly close to each other in terms of philosophy. Attacking football, high pressure, want to play football from the back. There are good football players on both sides. We just need six very good days and we have to take something from here. Dortmund is the big favorite in this group, but we are never without a chance. If we have confidence and continue to radiate that, we will see what we can get out of it,” said the choice manager.
