FC Twente started the new season in the Eredivisie with a victory. In their own Grolsch Veste, the team of Ron Jans, who made his official debut in Enschede, won 2-0 over Fortuna Sittard. Queensy Menig and Ajax mercenary Danilo set off those goals. Because all three Eredivisie matches ended in 2-0 or 0-2 on Saturday night, the league has three shared leaders: FC Twente, sc Heerenveen and Feyenoord.

Both teams have started the season with a new coach: Jans is for the group at FC Twente this season and Kevin Hofland has been promoted from Fortuna as head coach this summer. Jans let Danilo Pereira and Václav Cerny make their debut for FC Twente in the Eredivisie up front. Right back there was another newcomer standing in line with Tyronne Ebuehi. Fortuna joined newcomers Zian Flemming, Sebastian Polter, Emil Hansson, Ben Rienstra, Mats Seuntjens and returning Roel Janssen.

FC Twente started strong and hoped to take the lead early. A bet from Wout Brama from a promising position changed direction in the fourth minute, but shortly afterwards the home side opened the scoring. After a short tussle with the defender, Jayden Oosterwolde finally tucked the ball home. After fifteen minutes there was a big chance at the 2-0: Danilo was right in front of an empty goal, but the ball was played a little too hard.

After FC Twente’s quick start, the pace dropped significantly. After the great chance of Danilo, the home team could create almost no danger. The same goes for Fortuna, who became threatening after fifteen minutes by a shot from Hansson on the edge of the penalty area. Shortly after half-time, FC Twente doubled the margin of eleven meters. Branislav Ninaj holds Jesse Bosch’s shoulder, after which Danilo successfully lands from eleven meters. Goalkeeper Alexei Koselev chose the right angle but did not get far enough.
