The disturbances before and during the European Championship final at Wembley on Sunday may have financial consequences for the English Football Association. UEFA has launched an official investigation, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon. A total of four charges have been drawn up following the events surrounding the final battle between England and Italy.

UEFA is considering, among other things, the entry of English supporters from the field at Wembley. In addition, the FA risks a penalty for throwing objects on the pitch, disrupting the Italian national anthem by English fans and setting off fireworks. In addition, a special inspector has been appointed to take a closer look at the disorder in the stadium. The European Football Association has not announced what the possible penalty or fine will be. It was already restless in various places in London on Sunday afternoon and there were also serious disturbances around Wembley later that day.

Images soon surfaced of the chaotic situation prior to the European Championship final. Dozens of supporters without tickets tried to get into the stadium in north London. Initially, Wembley and UEFA reported that no one had managed to get in, but a video posted on social media soon revealed that fans had indeed gained access to the stadium.

The video showed several people breaking through the gates of Wembley. Initially it appeared that the unticketed fans had only broken through the first security line, which gives access to the area around Wembley. However, the images showed that supporters also managed to get into the corridors of the stadium. There they found supporters who had entered with a valid ticket and they were not served by the intruders. This led to fights, in which the invaders were apparently dealt with harshly. In addition, the fans’ anger was directed at the stewards, who were told to “do their job”.
