National coach Gareth Southgate has appointed Tom Heaton to the England squad for this upcoming European Championship. The 38-year-old third goalkeeper of Manchester United will not be part of the group as a player, but as a 'training goalkeeper'. Heaton will provide support for Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson throughout the European Championship.

The experienced Englishman did not play a single minute for Manchester United this season, but will still experience the European Championship in Germany up close. It is not entirely clear what exactly Heaton's role will be, but what is certain is that he will at least train for the entire tournament.

“I am very happy that Tom is coming with us to Germany,” Southgate said on the English association's website. “Experience has taught us that a tournament demands a lot from our goalkeeping group led by Martyn Margetson (the goalkeeping coach, ed.).”

“Tom will play an invaluable role on the training pitch supporting Jordan, Aaron and Dean. Off the field he will contribute to the positive atmosphere we always want to create. We are grateful to Manchester United for their support to make this possible.”

Heaton served as the third goalkeeper this season the Red Devils and, as mentioned, did not take action for a single minute. The three-time international of the English national team also has an expiring contract, although the club is in discussions with him to extend that contract.

England will face Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia in the group stage of the European Championship. The Three Lions are one of the big favorites for the overall victory in Germany.
